Texas and Other States Reach $7.4 Billion Settlement with Perdue Pharma<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Texas and 14 other states have secured a $7.4 billion settlement from the Sackler family and their company, Purdue Pharma, for their roles in creating the opioid crisis. Purdue Pharma was the manufacturer of OxyContin.

The money will pay for opioid addiction treatment, prevention and recovery programs in communities across the United States during the next 15 years, Paxton said. It is not clear how the money will be distributed, including how much Central Texas communities will receive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marijuana and Vaping More Popular Than Cigarettes In Teens<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cigarette smoking has dropped so sharply among American teenagers that vaping and marijuana use are now more common, according to a national survey of adolescent drug use released Thursday. The report found that 22.9 percent of high school seniors said they had used marijuana within the previous 30 days and 16.6 percent had used a vaping device. Only 9.7 percent had smoked cigarettes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Almost Half of Those Who Resolve a Drinking or Drug Problem do so Without Assistance<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new study from the Recovery Research Institute at Massachusetts General Hospital has aimed to estimate the number of Americans who have had a drug or alcohol problem. According to their report almost half of respondents who had reported a previous problem overcame it without assistance. Furthermore only 46% of those who were successful in overcoming their problem said they were “in recovery.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Forty-six percent of Americans have a friend or family member with a current or past drug addiction<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Pew survey conducted in august found that 46% of Americans have a friend or family member with a current or past addiction. This finding showed no particular increase or decrease when broken down by race or political leanings. There was a notable decrease in people over 65 and in those with post graduate degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
