What Does A Health Department Do?
Community Health Services
Community health nurses provide services to help prevent disease. These services can include clinics that address adult health, immunizations, communicable diseases, and sexually transmitted diseases.
Laboratory Services
Provision of clinical and environmental diagnostic services include water testing, private water testing, and infectious disease testing.
Support Services
Support services are provided by staff members who are capable of running the day-to-day tasks of the health department.
Environmental Health Services
The Health Department provides a safe environment by regulating and implementing city and county ordinances, continuously monitoring food service establishments, and educating the public on general sanitation.
Health Education & Promotion
Health Department staff provide resources to the community through health statistics, educational pamphlets, local resource referrals. Presentations on a variety of health topics are also offered.
Emergency Preparedness & Response
It is the responsibility of the health department to develop plans to maintain the public’s health. Emergency plans are prepared for any event involving a health response.
